The White Goddess,the Birchen Maiden,the Lady of the Forests. ..The elegant,slender and delicate maiden of the forests,the greening of the birch is a universal symbol of returning light ,of the end of the dark half of the year. She is,it's said,the original White Goddess,the Silver Lady,herald of spring,the pure white light of Candlemass,the trigger for renewal.

 In February,they say,she leaves the shelter of the birches and goes abroad,and in doing so her feet fall upon the earth and summon growth and renewal with every step. Berkano is the rune of the Birchen Maid,personifying the feminine principle,purity,nurturing,motherhood and children.Her spirit is symbolic with new life,both literally and esoterically,of healing,continual renewal,new beginnings within the cycle of continuation.Like spring.And perhaps most important of all...she represents hope.Once upon a time,all man's hopes lay in the greening of the birch. Indeed,she was once held sacred to the Goddess of Spring,Pertcha,in whose honour rites of shamanic ecstacy were held...and beneath the birch grows the shamanic mushroom,fly agaric.She is a tree with a key,one that might allow us to unlock the realms of hidden consciousness.

Later the birch was associated in Norse mythology to Idunna,keeper of the golden apples of eternal youth,said to be of a race of God's even older than the Vanir.Everything about the birch points to ancient knowledge,to old,old wisdom,even though she herself appears continually young.Yet is that strange,that the symbol of continual renewal should itself appear young and renewed? But the birch is more than a neo pagan symbol of light,she is a symbol of the Sunwheel,the cycle of the seasons,and the cycle of birth,death and rebirth,putting her firmly in the realms of the shaman,and indeed,in some shamanic cultures the Birch is the World Tree. This is a wand  of new beginnings,not just symbolically,but also literally.Birch was the first tree to seed itself after the glaciers receeded,the first peoples were able to survive with the help of the birch.She has been here from the very beginning,and she remembers back that far.Right back to the very first begining,when everything was new and nothing had been defiled.
