The Briar Rose

A most magical of flowers with an ancient history,symbol of nations and Kings,symbol of love and romance..and symbol of the Great Goddess herself.

In traditional witchcraft the rose in question is the wild rose..sweetbriar or dog rose..the Mother Rose,garden hybrids or domesticated roses just will not do.Roses are held sacred to the Goddess,to Hel,Isis,Demeter,protected, it's said,by the Elvin King,whose permission must be obtained before picking,they are the flower that most represents the Otherworld..and we might recall Cochrane's Rose Castle that stands beside the River of Time,the Briar Rose,Snow White and Rose Red..our folklore is filled with the tales of roses and their strange and almost mystical relationship with humankind.Even today christianity retains the relationship between the rose and the divine feminine in the imagery of Mary..Our Lady of the Roses.The flowers that survive from one belief to another may well be seen as the flowers of true power.We are not allowed to forget,it seems,even if we choose not to remember.The Goddess of the Old Faith ,the Great Mother,will retain her presence,is still within the natural world all about us,even if we choose not to see her,and the relationship between the folk and the mother goddess is still,perhaps now unconsciously,remmebered year after year in the countless Rose Queens of countless village fetes. 

Roses have an ancient magical association,being used in all manner of enchantments,divinations and psychic works,  a gateway flower,the rose is an essential enchanters tool.But we should always remember that besides the beautiful fragrant flowers lie the sharp thorns.The wild rose is a briar..an old name for all thorned or prickled plants and so is employed in the magic of defence and protection..as well as those of attack and bewitching.Perhaps we should remember that the thorns that surrounded the Briar Rose did not just repel her would be errant knights..they entraped and killed them.But roses are also closely related to the realms of sleep and dreams..the sleep thorn is a charm said to bring about enchanted sleep,and generations of rural folk have sought out the "Sleep Apple"..a fungal growth on the stems of wild roses said to lull even the most restless child.

This is older wood,more deeply coloured and lightly streaked with darker pigmentation.A good strong wand with classic gnarls and thorn scars and a visible graining.

Svefnthorn

Beautiful and extremely rare handcrafted wild briar rose wand,scribed with the four Icelandic runestaves of the Sveftnthorn..the Sleepthorn.

 

Modern magic today relates these rune stave to the realms of sleep and peaceful the Svefnthorn laid under  a pillow or bed is said to bring sleep to the sleepless.Yet traditional witchcraft has an altogther older understanding.

This ancient set of rune staves was intented to cast magical sleep over someone or something..enchanted sleep during which nothing would age or decay.Mythology tells us that Wodan/Odhinn used these staves to "preserve" the beauty of women by casting this enchanted sleep over them..and if we recall the tale of the Briar rose/sleeping Beauty,we can see that not only did the Briar Rose herself fall into this enchanted sleep..so did the rest of the household..and were hidded away with a compass of briars.

 

A way to preserve something..either something you want to keep  or something you want to stop.A "sleep" that might end concious resistance..and might also render magical attacks ineffective against you.While something"sleeps" it is incapable of anything..save to dream.And of course,you might also dictate those dreams.
