For countless generations and throughout many cultures,trees have been attributed with healing properties.Certainly many remedies are made from the physical leaves,bark,sap or flowers of many trees....but in traditional witch doctoring there is more to healing than the simple pacification of the physical symptoms.

In order to heal,a witch doctor must be able to trace and treat an illnesses emotional,psychological and physical effect.A physical illness can be detrimental to the spiritual amd psychological wellbeing of a person..and an emotional or psychological illness can lead,in turn,to a physical illness.

Healing then is throughout the whole body..both the physical and the non physical.

If you believe that everything contains natural energy..then the "borrowing" and combining of energies from plants and trees might not seem so strange.Trees can repel,strengthen,protect,nuture and enliven according to their place in any one cultures belief system.For a very long time runes have been carved on specific woods as charms against illness,amulets and talismans for good health carved and carried...and specific woods have been employed in the healing process,that their energy might support or repel illness.

Most trees carry with them huge amounts of folklore,some of it seems strange to modern ears,little but fantastical thinking,but most folklore and tales are based on a hard truth which may have been long forgotten...leaving us with something that seems to be simply a whistful fairy tale.

 

Ask a shaman..or a traditional English witch doctor..or a runemaster and you might hear a different answer altogether.

Healing wands are generally smaller,more discreet,less intimidating,and most of all they can be transported easily.Most measure between 8-12 inches,but are thicker than average.They are little concentrated powerhouses of energy..each one adding it's own particular energy to the healing process.We might say birch for childbirth,to instill lost hope..or we might say alder to aid the dying and the bereaved..but you might not agree.

So we won't..we'll just show you the wands instead.

An old charm,older than you might imagine...and employed against "hot" diseases..infections,fevers hot tempered insanity..anything that need "cooling"..or to contain and halt the progression of a disease.Traditionally diseases are seen to have a spiritual aspect..a spirit that can be met and fought on the spirtual plane.Oft times a hedgewitch might battle for the life of a patient with an illness on the spiritual plane and will need all the assitance and co-operation he/she can get in the form of herbs,symbols,runes and charms...or otherworldy/divine intervention.

This is old elder wood,naturally coloured,a shade darker than perhaps most elder wands.Elder has a soft pith at it's centre which is not suitable for shrapening to a point,so elder wands will have a softly rounded tip.

Consider the whole concept of healing and how you see it....

Beautiful air dried hazel wood,crafted to retain as much of it's natural features and raw power as possible.this wood has been naturally air dried out of doors and is about a raw as you might get yet still be called a crafted wand.

And very beautiful it is,with a deep brown/red colouring complete with gnarls,natural flecks and all the individual charcteristic marks on the bark.

And very powerful..because this wand bears a bind rune of two runic symbls.

The runic symbols date forma time when the rune staves were banned by the Christian church.These symbols concentrated the power of several staves and their concepts into the one symbol.They were not used for divination..but for magic and healing.

This is ash wood,perhaps considered to be the healers tree...folklore and mythology are full of tales of the ash trees ability to heal..everything from warts to ricketts,a tree that can absorb sickness into itself.

There are many names for the ash tree in rural communities,each said to protect against or heal differing illnesses.Shreder and Heder ashes againts the spells of male and female witches,Shrew-Ashes for infirmities in the limbs and Maiden Ashes,trees that have never been cut of lopped,perhaps the most potent healing force of all.
