Traditonal oils were once simply a means of preserving a plant or combination of plants against the time when the fresh material was not available.Herbs and plants were gathered at stragtegic times,most often when their medicinal and magical powers were considered to be at their most potent.Nothing has changed here at the Briar Rose..we still gather our fresh materials at peak potency or when traditional lore dictates..and preserve them..against the time when they are seasonally unavailable. Briar Rose's range of magical and ritual oils are unique..they contain simply the living spirit of the plant or tree that produced them.They are not essential oils,nor are they pretty fragranced oils,but infused oils of living green botanicals and pure cold pressed sunflower oil employed for it's esoteric properties.

In traditional crafts,in order for an oil or remedy to be effective,it must contain the living essence of the plants that go into it.To us,all plants or trees are sentient on the spiritual plane.Spend enough time with any plant or tree and evntually you will achieve some form of communication with it...the plant or tree will them teach you all you need to know as to it's uses,both magically and medicinally.

Perhaps this seems like a slightly insane policy..but it's also a very ancient policy and standard shamanic practice.Many of our oils share both  magical and medicinal qualities.

All our oils are made only when this communication and co-operation has been achieved.

All are made according to the strict proceedures and lore of hedgewitchery,hand gathered,hand blended,whispered over,chanted over,sung and danced into being... and finally thrice filtered and bottled.

We happen to believe our handcrafted oils are some of the best available..certainly they are perhaps some of the most genuine and authentic oils you might come across.We do not produce vast quantaties and so are not tempted to compromise our traditional beliefs or practises  in the making of them.

Bloodhilder..or Danewort/Walwort/Dwarf or Gound Elder..one of perhaps the most beloved traditional herbs available to the rural cunningman and herbwyfe.

Sadly this is another plant that is nowadays often considered a pest.To be honest it is tenacious,and can very easily swamp the average garden,but the it does produce masses of sweet smelling white flowers,which are the main ingredient in traditional elder flower water..and not the flowers of the elder tree,as is commonly presumed. A black dye is often made from the roots,excellent for colouring the hair or for ritual body adornment.

Once gotten into a ground,it is not easily gotten forth again,says Culpeper..which,of course,is quite true.

This plant has a colourful folk history..said to originate from land upon which blood has been split..more precisely,according to the Saxon tribes..on ground where Danish blood had been spilt....then again,according to some traditions, it was a plant used to mark the graves of fallen Norse warriors..hence the folk names Danewort and Bloodhilder/Bloodhylder (elder).Perhaps though it's simple enough to say that a battleground,with so many dead,is full of nutrients..and Bloodhilder is a strong invasive force,easily overunning and outgrowing  a lot of slower growing plants.Nevertheless,the name has stuck..and  almost a thousand years later is still in common use.

Now this plant,which is no more than a dense shrub,is more powerful than the Elder tree.A stronger purgative and a powerful diuretic when taken internally..capable of producing violent vomiting in high doses.But then that's what a purgative does..it purges things.

Externally the pounded leaves and oil made from the leaves has been used for centuries for common,and often embarrassing complaints.

An excellent deep penetraing anti inflammatory and the warmed oil is much used for rhuematism,lower back pain,ulcers or abcesses caused by bad circulation,as in ulcerated varicous veins,earache,inflammed or bloodshot eyes,piles,womens menstrual pain,delayed menstration,burns and scalds.

Wild Hyacinth,Ring O'Bells,Wood Bells..modern craft writers asign the attributes of luck and truth to the common woodland bluebell,yet traditional crafts have  a much more arcane view of this beautiful blue belled flower.
